There are several possibilities for file upload handlers. But for you the jQuery one is not an option because your server does not have the right minimum requirements. Choose a different handler.
All handlers do the same job, just in a different presentation.

E-Mail via FTP is probably a translation mistake? You can upload folders with or without images or further folders to the root /albums folder so they become albums and also content within those album via ftp.
