The image order for the front end is set in the Options->Images tab.
If this is set to Title, say, is the backend image order (when editing an album's images) also set to title at the same time?

If not, is there a setting which will set the default backend image order for all albums?

You can set the backend order on the images tab (not the images sorting one) on each album. That is then remembered for all albums by cookie until you change it again or clear cookies naturally. Then the gallery option setting or the individual album one is used.

That backend order is independent from the front end order you set on the gallery options or the album page itself.
