This is the problem that I am running into with using subalbums. I have a main album called "private" under that album I have 3 subalbume called "john, linda, family" The 2 albums "john, linda" are both password protected and the "family" is not. The "john, linda" sub folders both have a different password than the "private" album. When I try to go into eitheither of the "john or linda" albums I get the error "internal server error" but the "family" album that is not password protected works just fine. If I set the password in both of the albums "john, linda" to the same as the album "private" then it works just fine. What do I have to change to get this to get it working the right way?

Internal server errors are usually caused by problems with the .htaccess file. Have you tried all this with mod_rewrite reset?
