I'm moving a site from GoDaddy to a new host. It will be my first ZenPhoto install and I am curious what hosting company/package you'd recommend for a trouble free install. Whoever I pick, it is likely to be a shared server...

edited to add - might consider staying with GoDaddy but the current Windows server has to go anyone have ZP working on GoDaddy?

I'm using Godaddy with Unix and the only thing I can't get going is the Mod-Rewrite. However, I've made changes to my template and I think I screwed something up because when I first installed Zenphoto it was working fine.

So far no problems for me and things look great.

It's been used successfully on Dreamhost by several users.

I have installed about 20 Zen galleries running on Surpass Hosting Servers.

I used to use Brinkster and their servers are not compatible.

Surpass has great service and good deals on hosting. What I like is the possibility of many add on domains even unlimited. Unlimited mySql servers and a good control panel.

Well, shiver me timbers, trouble free install on a 1&1 shared server I can access. Thanks for the suggestions, I will also be checking those out.

Dreamhost! They'll do an "easy" (no files on your domain) install or you can do it yourself by downloading the 1.1.5 release then the nightly builds. Dreamhost is fantastic with their offerings and cheap. Free registration of your domain with hosting.

I've been using Site 5 for years now and I higly recommend them. Their service is outstanding and, of course, no problem with ZP at all.

If you are looking for a cheap and easy setup dreamhost wins hands down. That said, dreamhost is known for memory/cpu restrictions which slows down thumbnail caching.

We perhaps should have a page on our site with host recommendations. Then we could add none US hosts, too.

So here a few recommendations for German users I have used successfully:

Strato (though they still seem not to support mod_rewrite, and this as one of the biggest (and most expensive) hosts here....)

I can recommend servage.net, very stable, cheap, lots of space... and they have lots of extras, that is not always found.

They give you possibility to change some PHP parameters, ie. register_globals, safe_mode.... to be managed individually for each domain, not to mention unlimited domain hosting and unlimited mail accounts.

And they also have a referral program, so you can earn some benifits... both as the referrer and referred... :-)

I am using GoDaddy and have not experienced any problems. The default installion worked. You need to create a database first, then get the host name for the database before doing the ZP setup. Everything is running smoothly.

I switched from Hostica to Hostgator, because Hostica didn't support Imagick, and with zp-galleriffic theme, the medium size pictures looked pale compared to the full size pictures, plus the mass upload from the back office didn't work.
With Hostgator, Zenphoto is fully functional, including Mod-Rewrite, and Imagick is a key feature for faithful colors and contrast.
Fantastic technical support. Expensive though...
Definitely, a "hit parade" of the best hosts for Zenphoto would be great!
