BTW, whats the proper way to update zenphoto when you have zenpage? and visa versa?

Click the image, as if you were to open it in a new window to view the full image...
The box thingy opens, but no image, thats fine because I dont want the full image viewable... but the box shouldnt even open...

What should I do?

Updating is actually the same as ever. Updating Zenpage is like installing it. Bascially overwrite all files.

Some hints to make life easier:
Be sure to keep your albums folder (maybe the cache folder, too) and the zp-config.php file within zp-core. Best move that outside the existing zp-core folder before overwriting.
Also of course you should have a backup of any custom made changes like themes.
Then overwrite all other files for zenphoto, then overwrite the zenpage plugin files. Now move your zp-config.php file back to zp-core. Now run setup and all should be fine.

Regarding the full image. You need to modify the theme's image.php and remove the thickbox code. Actually just remove the thickbox css class from the link. Probably I should make that an option some day.
