I notice that in version 1.3.1 the client-side editing in one language erases the text in another language. Is this fixed in 1.4?

By client side do you mean editing the text on the front-end pages? If so, that has not and will not support multi-language capabilities. In more recent versions of Zenphoto that facility is disabled by default because it presents a serious cross site reference forgery vulnerability.
