I'm sure this must be a really easy problem.

I'm trying to put up a reference demo version of ZenPhoto on our server (Red Hat).

I download, extract the tarball, fetch the page up in a browser, and I get the setup script. I set the mysql settings, and save these, and I then get... A blank page. No data returned at all. THe new database remains untouched as well, however it's doing something since if I change the password on the database server I get the setup page back, complaining that it's getting permisison denied.

Must be somethnig dead easy, but I've got nothing to go on.

Any hints gratefully recieved.

easiest way to find out what's going on is to check your server error logs, it'll give whatever fatal call is being made. Blank screens are normally that.

There's no error message posted. Logs the fetch as delivered correctly - just zero length

Are you sure that your server matches the requirements and supports PHP at all? Just asking... Best you post a little info about your server configuration.

It defintely matches the requirements. We've got loads of Wordpress instances running, for example.

I can post the output of phpinfo() if need be, but I don't want to flood the forum with too much data.

What confuses mee is that I setup() responds when it can't get to the database, but then goes completely quiet once I give it the credentials.

Ok. As micheall already said a blank screen is normally a fatal php error. If nothing is in the server error log we are actually guessing.

I suggest to post some info of your server, does not need to be the full phpinfo() yet but at least PHP version, MySQL version.

The logs you want to check are normally called the "CGI" or script error logs.

I've checked those - each of our vhosts has their own pair of logfiles, plus I've monitored /var/log/php and /var/log/messages - none of them show an error.

It looks okay so far. If I recall correctly we had an issue with the gettext extension not being present and causing setup trouble. gettext is not required actually if you use Zenphoto's backend in English anyway (which I suppose you do..;-)) Don't remember right now if that was 1.3 or 1.2.9 though. But actually this should really cause an php error in the log.

You said you have some Wordpress installs running. Did you maybe accidentally messed up index files of both or so? (Just guessing...) Did you install zenphoto in a subfolder? Do you have a correct .htaccess file? If possible you could post a link so we can take a look directly.

What you could try for now is to install the nightly build.

I'm not putting ZP up as part of Wordpress - it's stand-alone, for a particular customer.

It "should" be visible at http://www.arts.ac.uk/zp-demo/ (this is a demo installation before the final one. Feel free to poke around. Do you want me to change the DB password so you get some response?

Well, Zenphoto is always standalone, it can be used with Wordpress but as a part of it.. J

From the PHP info you posted, the log that you want is stored on the server at /var/log/php. If you can't get access to that file, you could add these lines to Zenphoto's index.php to (hopefully) redirect any error output to Zenphoto's error log:

I've got access to that file, it's not showing any error.

What's funny is if the password is correct I get the blank page...

The error you are getting is from your MySQL software. Either the user/password you supplied is not correct/has insufficient permissions, or your MySQL server has a bug. In either case we can not help much.

If you look further up the posting you will see that I deliberately changed the MySQL account password, so as to not get a blank screen. If the mysql account password is correct, then ZenPhoto returns nothing at all, with no error that I can find in any logs. This, as you point out is because MySQL is complaining about a bad password - which I set deliberately. I'd like to know if anything else is wrong. If you look above, the URL is globally accessible,

What I'm trying to find out is what could be causing that.

Well, normally blank screens are caused by PHP script errors. If there is no error that you can find it is pretty difficult to tell what the error was.

Things that have been known to cause this in the past (all corrected in the current version of Zenphoto) have been lack of gettext() support, skippping too many Zenphoto versions, problems with mbstring(), and PHP saying it has Imagick support when it does not.

If you cannot find the error and the current build still exhibits this problem we are really at an impass.

I'm getting the blank screen too. I have trashed my local installation, a copy of the remote site, because I had messed it up. I wanted to get a copy from the remote version again, but I cannot set it up anymore.

The former installation was on the same computer, I'm working with Mampp. I did it exactly like yesterday when I did the first copy to my local "server":

1. Installed Zenphoto locally.
2. Copied all customized themes or plugins from the old to the new location.
3. Copied the albums and the cache folder from the old to the new location and if you used Zenpage also the uploaded folder.
4. Exported the database with the phpadmin wizard and imported it to Mampp.
5. Tried to run setup (zp-core/setup.php).

And that was it... blank screen.

Without knowing what error actually appears we will not be able to help. So please look into the server error log.
