I love the super-simple look of the Default theme, but find myself in a quandary because I'd like to add a calendar of upcoming gallery shows to my website. From what I can tell, this requires me to use the ZenPage plugin and a different theme.

Is this really the only way, or do I have any other options?

You could always take a look over here at the theming tutorial and modify the default theme to include what you need for the events calendar.

There is no "event calender" plugin available. I think someone made a script for this sometime ago but never released it as a plugin (to my knowledge).

But if you mean a news section like a blog, micheall is right.

Thanks. I perused available themes again, and discovered the new zpMasonry theme, which I guess was released yesterday. This one definitely has the simple, elegant look I'm going for, and as a bonus does ZenPage. So far so good!
