Hello,
is there a way to merge albums from different Zenphoto installations, keeping album and image titles/description?
I heard of a metadata export function coming with future releases, is it available yet?

The only possibility right now would be if those info is stored in the metadata of the images themselves.
You could of course try exporting info via the database but that will be some work to do.

The XMPMetadata plugin does provide for exporting the Zenphoto metadata.

Has there been any progress with this since the topic was originally posted? I have two separate Zenphoto installations with broadly similar content and without the key image information in metadata, and would now like to combine them into a single installation. I have a plan to sort out the images once they are all in the one place, but don't know how to make this first step.
