You did all right and just discovered an unnoticed bug.

As comforting as that is, I would like some guidance on what I can do about it. Will I just have to wait for an update that fixes it?

It is fixed already. Just download and install the Support buid.

The support build (very soon to become 1.5.6) just already got a fix for this. You could use the plugin file from that directly (normally we don't recommend this but in this case you can).
