What are the highest levels of security, as far as permissions go, that can be put on zen files and folders (ie. cache and zp-core ; I already saw the bit on the album folder in the troubleshooting section)

I've been having problems with the cache folder in particular. Everything runs smooth at 777, but it's not preferable

Please read here: http://www.zenphoto.org/2009/03/troubleshooting-zenphoto/#29
Actually setup should provide an option for more restricted permissions (at least in the nightly).

What settings will work will depend on your server's security implementation. Particularly on how it gates access from scripts like PHP. 0777 is the only guarentee, but as you note, it is not so secure. 0755 would be preferable for folders and 0644 for files. But if those do not work you will have to find what will.

Thanks for the replies, I'll just tinker around with it. As a side note, applying strict permissions in the setup doesn't work for me - maybe thats and indication that 644 and 755 won't work with the server

Strict permissions is 0644/0755.
