I just downloaded a new copy of Zenphoto, but I am not am to install it. The installation stops at PHP gettext() support. What comes after that step? I was wondering what to look for that is failing.

Your PHP conifiguration is missing some recommended support. Also there is a bug in the 1.2.6 release that causes the setup program to fail when this is the case.

I recommend you download the nightly build and install it.
