Looks good! The only thing I might reccomend is to wait until the whole image is actually loaded to dismiss the message... to do that, you should use an onload event on the image--it runs once the image is completely loaded.
This might be the first real AJAX theme Not sure it has any use though... it's just as fast without the javascript :-P

I totally agree with you that ajax is not really faster. It was just a try, but I reach the limit of ajax: there is too much things to update in the screen. Maybe it can be usefull if there is no comments part.
I think my next theme will be without ajax to keep everything simple.
