Hey ZenPhoto-ers,

Is there any way to get Zenphoto to automatically resize images uploaded to it, then delete the originals? I have a limited amount of webserver space (as most do), and most of the people uploading to my site are not the most tech savvy, so It would be too much to ask them to resize their 6-8+ megapixel photos before uploading. I know ZP resizes dynamically for display, but it still keeps the originals in full size. Is there any way to get it to scale them down as they are uploaded, then trash the originals?

No, as that is not the way Zenphoto works. Zenphoto always stores the original images as you uploaded them so you don't need to reupload in case you change your theme and image sizes. These images are used to create the cached images (thumbs and sized images).

Generally it is not recommend to upload that big images as it can cause servers to overload. Especially if you have shared hosting (which I assume on "limited webspace"). See the troubleshooting about that. There are really lots of tools available to resize images offline conventiently before uploading. I think it is not too much to teach people this at all...

To further what acrylian has said. Zenphoto will not modify the original image. However, it does indeed resize the image to the size needed by the theme.

If you are concerned about the overhead of resizing the images, rest assured, that happens only once as the resized images are cached (and that overhead would of course be needed if Zenphoto resized the original.)

If you are concerned about disk storage, remember that one can now buy a 2TB disk for under $80.

I'm sure his concern isn't about his personal storage, but more about the storage available on his webhost. However I agree with acrylian, it shouldn't be hard to ask them to resize their image to something within your limits.

Worst case scenario is you setup quotas and then have a link to "Why is my quota already at maximum?" or something like that for a FAQ page and explain why images need to be resized and provide a brief tutorial on how to resize and give links to tools to use.

Edit: As an addendum, Zenphoto will indeed modify your original image, just not by default. (The crop image plugin).

Well,my point was that if the WEB provider is not supplying reasonalble space at a reasonable cost then he is being riped off. There is no excuse for that in today's competitive environment.

Switch providers. For example, my provider, POWWEB, provides me with "unlimited" disk space. Since this is a personal WEB site, you can presume I am not paying an arm and a leg for it.

But anyway, the quota suggestion is a good one.
