I haven't installed Zenphoto yet, I've a couple of questions I need answered first
This is the show stopper
I've been trying to get an alternative gallery to work without success. I was trying to set user permission, the problem was with PHP stuff 'mod_rewrite' and 'AllowOverride' and getting them to work using a .htaccess file. Had partial success with the first, total failure with the latter.

First question, will i have to mess about with a htaccess file to get permissions to work - any problems along this line at all.

Second question (only a little one) stand alone pages yes/no if yes how are they shown

A 'no problems' answer to the first would-be nice

1. What permissions? There are "access" permissions that can be set via the user rights management which is documentated on the user guide seciton.
   And there are file/folder permissions on the server itself. Both have nothing to do with htaccess You mean probably htaccess password protection but that applies only for directories which Zenphoto does not really use directly.
   You should install Zenphoto and play a little around. A lot is self explanatory and needs to be seen instead of just answered here.

2. If you use the Zenpage CMS plugin you can apply user rights etc. to pages as well.

That sounds good, yes it was applying user permissions, couldn't give the OK to upload or add, was wary of spending time setting up and learning then finding users couldn't actually do much.
I shall install and 'play a little around' - my preferred method
