Installation Problem

I tried to install ZenPhoto but ended up with error messages about turning off magic quotes, etc. But I have no idea how to correct any of those problems. Is it possible to get help with that?

I tried support from Netfirms, but they aren't allowed to help anyone install ZenPhoto manually instead of using Simple Scripts.

  • First, if those items are warnings, you do not have to turn them off, it is just a recommendation.

But how you turn them off will, unfortunately, depend on how Netfirms has configured its servers, PHP, etc. so only they will have the definitive answer.

The best solution is to change the settings in the PHP.ini file. See http://php.net/manual/en/configuration.file.php for details. So you can ask Netfirms how you access you php.ini file.

If they tell you that you are not allowed to change your php.ini file then you may be able to override the file settings with .htaccess file statements. See http://php.net/manual/en/configuration.changes.php for documentation. Again, if this will be allowed is up to Netfirms.

One comment about your host. If they do install Zenphoto via SimpleScripts but do not address these PHP settings issues, then they are doing their users a disservice. We make these recommendations for good reasons. SimpleScripts may not report that the settings are incorrect, which is not a nice thing to do. A good example of why we are reluctant to endorce installations made in this way.
  • Thanks for the help! I had actually already gone to the php manual link you recommended, but until your response, I didn't feel confident I was doing the right thing. I had several warnings and one item change that was required.

Netfirms wouldn't help with telling me anything even about the php.ini file because they knew I wanted help installing without using Simple Scripts.

Just thought I'd post a bit of what I did in case someone else using Netfirms is wondering what to do. I did a search on php in Netfirms support where I found an article on using php which contained a link to the php.ini file where I was able to edit it. When I installed ZenPhoto I needed to provide the database host. I found it in the Control Panel - MySQL.
  • Odd that a "service" provider would not want to provide you service. But then, I guess it takes all sorts. Personally, if I got that kind of "help" I would look for another provider. There are certainly lots of them out there.
