mysterious directory

Looking for help.

I am not sure this belongs here howerver the other forums did not seem appropriate eighter.

I have the latest zenphoto installation on my website. inspiringshots.com - I had a directory called bats that contain a stats program. I removed the directory and it still shows up. www.inspiringshots.com/bats/index.php. which is a duplicate of the main page. I never had the file there to the best of my knowledge. once you click on a link on the bats\index.php file it redirects the site proper.
I have tried.
1. creating a bats/ directory with a index.php file that does a 301 redirect to the main page. You get a blank page then and not a redirect.
2. I have tried to doing a redirect from the htaccess file and again no effect.
3. I have tried renaming the htaccess file and the index.php by adding a "1" which produces the default page of no content here. The mysterious file also cannot be reached at this point.
4. I have talked to the hosting company and they can see no problems with the server or the site.
From the stats log about half my traffic is going to the mysterious directory and file. Any Ideas?

  • I am guessing you are seeing some kind of caching issue. Perhaps a proxy server is caching the site along the way.
  • thanks for your response,

when you say proxy server maybe cashing the site. Would that be from
    1. my connection to the web, I think mine is a direct connection.
    2. from my webhost
    3. or from a 3rd party as in hacking

If #3 would doing a clean install on the hosting account prove a solution.
  • If there is a proxy server caching the pages it would be most likely your webhost, but could be your internet provider as well.
  • Many thanks for your kind respnse, my questions can be not so bright at times.

Again when you have time I appreciate the help you can give me.

I spoke with a tech at the host. They swear there is nothing on the server side that would cause the issue of the ghost pages.

    1. We edited the htaccess file making it blank and the home page showed up and the mysterious pages showed the proper 404 response. So logic would have it that it is the code in the htaccess file or pages.php is allowing pages that don't exist. Interestingly if you followed the link to the ghost page above you would get a proper 404 page. Google returns it as a page. In addition google lists a page a duplicate because it looks at the directory say flowers and looks at flowers/ and returns two separate pages for a number of pages and directories.

    2. Reinstalled it into a fresh database with no content the ghost page is still there.
I guess I can start with pages.php and try for a php 301 and if that does not work go for modify the rewrite rules in htaccess.

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

I also ran a security scan which attempted to hacked the site and found confirmed injection vulnerability and a couple of other things. More than happy to send you the documentation if you send me an email. I do not want to expose any sites.
    Best to you,
    Bruce
  • When you re-installed did you remove all traces of the old installations? That is delete all the files and let Setup create a new `.htaccess` file?
  • With regards your security scan. First install the current nightly build and re-run. If you still get issues create a trouble ticket with the information.
  • Thanks for the your response, Yes, I have deleted everthing including the databases. new datbase name and new install done manually from the latest upload on the main site. I have done this a number a times not trying maybe 8 times because I thought someone was changing the code. I will do another one tomarrow. to me it's odd that a 301 redirect does not work from the htacess file. you would think it would, and yes the 301 properly fomatted. thanks again.

I suppose you did not bother to read our forum rules and such. If you did you would realize that the web site you post in your profile is nowhere searchable on the site, so useless in promoting your SEO.

Your message is SPAM, but I am leaving it just in case some other would be spammer reads this. (Oh, why would I believe that? They do not even read that URLs in their profiles are useless.)
