PDF failures on tablets and mobile devices?

It appears as though Zenphoto's support for PDF files ("images") is incompatible with browsers on mobile devices, at least including smart phones and tablets. I'm using the Zenpage theme, if that matters. Here is what I'm seeing:

1. Everything about viewing, printing, and downloading PDF "images" from albums seems to be working very well on "regular" PCs. It works great and is a huge success among my users. Hurray!! It works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome. By a "regular PC" I mean a PC running one or another variant of MS Windows. I believe (haven't had any complaints) that it also works for a PC running Linux or the Mac OS.

2. I am astonished to report that it works perfectly on my Kindle Fire (which is running Android -- though not Lollipop). This is surprising because otherwise the Kindle is a POS and all kinds of stuff is crappy on it. But the Zenphoto stuff I have works well.

2. I have one user who has a couple of Android tablets running Lollipop. When he tries to print or download a PDF file from an album, he gets a message about "PDF format errors" and the printing or downloading fails. There is nothing wrong with the PDF file, and he can download and print it from locations outside Zenphoto. So this error message is spurious.

3. On my iPhone and using Safari, the PDF file displays in the little embedded Zenphoto browser window. But ONLY THE FIRST PAGE displays and there is NO SCROLLBAR and the TOOLBAR will not appear when you touch the screen (which is what I would expect would bring up the toolbar).

4. On my iPhone and using Chrome, I get the same result as with Safari.

5. I'm waiting to hear if it works on an iPad.

I know it is an incredible pain (or an impossibility) to support every release of every browser on every platform. I'm not really very disappointed that this isn't working on smart phones. But tablets are another matter since many people are moving to these as their primary "computers".

Any thoughts on this? I'm reporting it mostly in case it turns out to be some simple oversight in the PDF support, or in case there's something I've missed or there is some workaround for the tablets. Otherwise, I'll just have to tell my users that they need to access our library from a "regular" PC.

Zenphoto itself has no "real" support for PDFs. The class-anyfile plugin only makes Zenphoto recognize them. The class-webdocs plugin uses external handlers to display pdfs and is limited to what these do. Besides that handling of PDFs itself is left to the browsers.

I don't know which theme you are using but the Download link is probably just the full image link so maybe some devices don't recognize the file correctly. Try setting up the theme using the downloadlist plugin maybe.

The next major release will have a better pdf handler though (no, sorry, no release date yet for that).
  • Thanks. I'll try that.

If you're going to add a better PDF handler, go ahead and add support for the MS Office product formats too. (Okay, just kidding. But what a whiz-bang CMS that would make Zenphoto!!)

MS Office we won't (closed source) but Open Document Formats we will indeed ;-)
