Is Upgrade solution for this error?

In various places on a website that contains a ZenPhoto installation, all of a sudden we are getting this error, many times on each page:

"Strict Standards: Only variables should be assigned by reference in /home/zp-core/classes.php on line 233"

I believe the ISP upgraded PHP to version 5.5 a few months ago.
This site is running ZP version 1.1.6

Is the new behavior likely to be remedied by an upgrade to the current version of ZP? Or is the source of the error elsewhere?

I administer the site, the owner just uploads his photos, etc. I haven't touched the code in several years.

    Yes most certainly, 1.1.6 is nearly eight years old and not supported. It is really recommend to upgrade frequently for various reasons.
