is it hard to accommodate non-images?

I couldn't find any tutorials or examples that portrayed anything other than images, and wanted to see if anyone knew before I spend too long trying to get it to work. What I have in mind to do, is a gallery with thumbnails, but if the related file is, for example, a .doc, I'll just be displaying an enlarged image of its icon.

If anybody's used Zen Photo to this end, I would really appreciate a tutorial. Thanks!

Not hard, all there already (although you might need to adjust your theme to your needs). There a plugins for audio, video and other non image files:

You can add an image to any of these to display within an album. This is called "video thumb" (even for non video as this was the first to support this) or with the better term "sidecar image".
