I was wondering if there was any change to the status of downloading search results or a dynamic album since this post in 2017? It would help my use case immensely.

No, sorry, still nothing ready made exists for searches. For a dynamic album you could try the download list plugin and its functions like this https://docs.zenphoto.org/1.5.x/function-printDownloadAlbumZipURL.html
But off hand don't know if that works with dynamic albums.
