Hints for those running short on storage - it's the cache!

Posting as it may help others

For some time I've had odd "random" errors with Zenphoto, mainly (but not limited to) full size images displaying as a black screen with "{{Error}}" in the middle. There was nothing obvious in the ZenPhoto logs

After a lot of digging, I think it was down to running out of storage on my commercial webhost. As a first guess, ZenPhoto retrieved the image from "albums", tried to cache the full size image but couldn't (no more storage...) ZenPhoto then tried to display the cached image, and it wasn't there...

Other related issues were being unable to write log files and (towards the end) being unable to patch or upgrade the site.

So, if things look "weird" with funny errors, Check the free space on your site !

Yes, that may be an issue. Also on "small" webhosts you may run into memory issues on processing the images in the first place, especially if you upload really high res images.

  • The individual files are not large, but there are an awful lot of them! At the last count 27,000 and averaging about 2Mb per file. We're digitising Dad's slide collection (he died in 2022) - he left around 50,000 and no notes so putting them online for people to view and comment seems the only way of finding what we have.

I see, that can of course cause storage shortage. Especially since there are various image sizes generated (depending on theme and plugins used) like sized images, thumbs etc.

On the overview admin page there is a tool (button) named "Gallery statistics" which gives you a rough overview how much storage the albums and cache folder use.
