Developer and Contributer Meeting / community branch

I'd like to hold the first ever Zenphoto meeting sometime in the following week.

I've taken the time to integrate the current changes in the "Community Build" into the SVN repository under a new branch, accessible here:
http://www.zenphoto.org/trac/browser/branches/community

I've got a lot to talk about with anyone interested in helping, and I'll come up with some sort of agenda soon. For now, I've got a list of items to discuss with developers (or anyone interested in check-in privileges) about the community codebase. It seems to be working pretty well, and there's definitely progress, but there are a few small things I just want to discuss. Great job everyone who helped with that, thank you!

I specifically request the presence of sbillard, aitf311, and mannkind, but everyone is welcome and encouraged to be there. It will be a text chat using an agreed-upon protocol (I like Skype, but can use anything).

So, let's work out a time and date. Let's start with Monday September 10th in the Evening PST, around 8:00 PM PST (GMT-8). If you want to join, let me know if you have that free, otherwise feel free to suggest other times and/or dates.

Thanks! I look forward to building this team and getting to work once again.

  • All right for me !
  • Sept 10 at 8PST works for me. I personally use pidgen and adium with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and GMail. Havent used skype but this could be a reason to get into the new wave.

If I calculate the time right that should be 11 a.m here. That should work. So I try to join too, but I never used any chat program before...as a Mac user I have iChat of course...
  • Indeed, 11 .a.m for Central Europe Acrylian ! I am an occasional mac user too and I am using Skype. You can download it for OS X here: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/macosx/.
  • Why don't you guys set up an IRC channel (e.g. at freenode.net) instead? Others may want to attend and this could be useful for future meetings.
  • I might actually be able to make it... yay! :P
    (Just so that I'm in-the-know.)
  • I agree with dartar, why not join #zenphoto on irc.freenode.net.

I will be ok for the meeting (on irc, msn, google talk, skype, or aim)

I've never really liked IRC.. always seemed too antiquated and linuxy.

If someone wants to set up a #zenphoto channel, or tell me how, I'm all for it though.

Otherwise I think gtalk or skype, or possibly a Campfire chat, they work fairly well.

Also, I realize 11 AM European is a bit of an odd time -- if it works better I can do any other time within 2-3 hours of that.
  • I'd totally want to be there ... If I'm invited that is :) I haven't done much recently for zenphoto but it has always been one of my greatest interests !
  • I'm a West Coaster myself, so 8:00pm PST works fine. I haven't used any of gtalk, skype, or Capmpfire so I'll install whatever is chosen.
  • I'll do my best to come and hang out too.
  • trisweb Administrator
Okay, with this many I think an IRC chat is our best bet. Anyone know how to set that up?

If that doesn't work we'll use one of the others, I know we're all capable of installing software ;-)

All are invited :) Should be fun.

FYI - Diff between the latest SVN and the community branch is fun to look at...

  • Consider that a #zenphoto IRC channel may also be useful for people to stick around and chat/help each other outside of official dev meetings. Freenode is the leading IRC server for opensource projects and they provide an excellent service, if you consider setting up a channel I'd strongly recommend them (we use Freenode for our own IRC channel).

You can create a channel simply by pointing your client to irc.freenode.net and typing /join #yourchannelname
    see http://www.livinginternet.com/r/ra_create.htm

Later you may want to officially register a group as well: http://freenode.net/group_registration.shtml

Sounds good, let's go the IRC route then. I'll figure it out this week and post instructions before the meeting. #zenphoto will be the channel of course.
  • Please will you post a transcript of the meeting on the forum?
    Thanks.

Yes, I'll do that. Thanks for the idea.
  • OK, there are a ton of IRC clients out there. Who will recommed one for Windows?
  • mIRC is what I have always used
  • This is a list of IRC clients that we set up for our own user community.

Is there a tentative lists of topics to be discussed during the meeting? I'm not sure yet I'll be able to attend but I would like to make a case for self-documenting code as per my recently opened ticket .
  • i'm not sure if i can make it, but will try and lurk.
  • *sigh*, I just realized that 8pm PST is 4am BST, so I probably won't make it either.
I'll take a look at the transcript afterwards.
  • trisweb Administrator
Yes, I will start putting together an agenda on the Wiki, feel free to add items you wish to discuss.

I agree with the self-documenting code, for the classes and other functions it makes perfect sense, especially for the Theme API (template functions). I can assure you we'll head in that direction.

mIRC is my preference too, seems decent. Pidgin has IRC capability if you have it installed already.
  • I just wanted to note that I can be available as early as 3:30 PST tomorrow. Just saw that you were thinking about moving the time.
