Woops - appear to have answered my own question before hitting "send", but as it appears to possibly be a bug I'll keep the question (below) and write what appears to be the answer at the end.

The Problem:

This question pertains to a new install of ZP 1.1.2 (NOT an upgrade).
(Which TOTALLY rocks by the way...)
I'm using the Default Theme.
I've got two albums currently, one with 25 images, the other with 23.
I click the first thumbnail in an album, and thereafter click the "next" button. At about image 10 it jumps back to the thumbnails. (10 isn't always consistent, but at some point before the last image it returns to thumbnails).
Could this be because I sorted images manually? I have set "albums per page" to 8 and "images per page" to 35 in the admin->options window. The wiki suggests there is a config item in zp-config.php, but that doesn't appear to still be the case with 1.1.2
Clicking a thumbnail always works (revealing the associated larger image). But clicking "next" doesn't always work start to finish for me.
I have tried multiple browsers, cleared browser cache and clicked "Refresh the Database".
I anticipate users of this site will be interested in clicking through start to finish instead of going back the the thumbnails, so I'd like to get it working right before announcing the gallery.

The (possible) Answer:

In both albums I had spotted images that appeared very similar to other images in that album. I had unchecked "visible" in the edit interface for an image in each of the two albums. That "hidden" image appears to be the point at which the "next" button choked. Is that possible? Just thought I'd share in case others have a similar issue.
Did I mention that 1.1.2 is awesome? It's by far the easiest experience I've had yet with ZenPhoto, which I have used in different versions for about 3 sites now.

I am pretty sure I observed the problem both logged in an not. I *know* I observed it logged out.

Would you like me to temporarily "hide" one of the images and see if that recreates the issue?
Actually - never mind that question. Here's what I did:
the first album ("Holiday concert") has nothing hidden.
The second album ("Fall Concert") has the eleventh image hidden (by unchecking the "visible" checkbox in edit mode).
Let's see if it happens again.

I've sent off a fix. Hope it makes the 1.1.3 cutoff.
For anyone reading this thread, I'm going to undo what I did, so (hopefully) you won't see anything broken...

Also, 1.1.3 fixes a few sorting bugs that made new albums load out of order initially, which could be confusing. So if you're getting confusing sorting/next image links then definitely upgrade.
