.HTACCESS

I have a password set for the gallery so I assumed I'd see an .htaccess file in my directory (invisible files set to show), but I don't.

My web host (Dreamhost) allows, in addition to passwording a directory, option to stop linking to files and/or images. This gets written to an .htaccess file.

I don't want two of them so am curious if I should be seeing one somewhere. And, if it is there, is it okay to "modify" with this extra option outside of Zenphoto. (Don't want to use Dreamhost's password option as it requires a lot of administration: username/password per person setup etc.

  • If you are using the zenphoto passwords, they are not done via the .htaccess file. (Not everyone can use that.) If you have the password in .htaccess, people will not be able to view anything in the folder that is protected. The zenphoto password permits viewing the album page, but with a logon screen instead of the images.

The two are compatible, so you could use both. If you use just the zenphoto password, it is possible for someone to guess paths to your images and view them by not going through zenphoto.
  • Okay, I'm going to set .htaccess to no linking. I like the Zenphoto password as it's a "page" not a popup window, and no administration required. There will always be ways of "stealing" photos, mine aren't award-winning. It's the nuts that link to them that I don't like as they use my bandwidth instead.

I have the robots.txt that disallows spiders etc so that keeps them away.
