I used the above code to display a thumb of the latest albums on the index page, however I also need to display as text the Title of the album, some text of the description below the thumbs, say the first 20 words and date album has been published. Is there a way to do so?

Seems to make sense to me to add these as options to that function(s). Could you please open a feature request ticket on the trac for it, so that we don't forget it?

In the meanwhile you have to copy, rename and modify that function and use it as a custom theme function.
