Please, please, please! I implore you: no more features! The main reasons I switched to zenphoto from the bloated and slow Gallery was due to its simplicity, elegance and performance. I'd truly hate to see zenphoto ending up in the same route as Gallery did. I'm a bit alarmed because I see more and more features being added in each release. If you're honest to the principles of functionality and simplicity, you need to stop adding anymore functionality.

You're doing a great job thus far and I'm very happy with your product both from the user perspective and from the developer perspective and I really hope you keep the code base small, simple and with good performance.

Peace.

  • I really love how Zen photo has developed in the last year and all the improvements and extra features are excellent. Maybe you got a point there with keeping on adding features will bloat up the program. From my perspective it would be interesting to see something like BBpress is doing keeping a small main core with a very powerful plugins to go with it.

I think it could be interesting to see some kind of a plugin system into Zen.
  • There is a simple solution to your delema--if it works for you don't upgrade. As evidenced by our poll, other users have features they would like to see added.

As far as "bloat' is concerned, if the features do not noticably slow zenphoto when not used what is the issue?
  • ZP is certainly not going to become Gallery. I wouldn't use it or contribute patches if I thought that. But there are some things that ZP lacks and needs. And there are plenty of things to go back and improve (one that I will definitely be working on when my school schedule tones down).
  • IMHO, there's a fine line between "features" and improvements required to keep ZP going. Adding a slideshow or ordering prints would, to me, be a feature. Not necessary to the functioning of ZP but something some want, others don't (I'm latter). Improvements are what keeps ZP running smoothly and applying new knowledge/techniques that don't hinder it's operation.

I'm on dial-up and also found Gallery too bloated and complex to handle. There was no way I'd do a self-install! (Dreamhost use to offer the install). ZP, I skipped Dreamhost's offer to install and download the nightly builds to the main install I have. Easy, compact, and doesn't crawl on 56k modem. (All images were already optimized web display)
