Can't you guys use IRC too?

I'm thinking that an official zenphoto IRC channel would really help a lot of users. On the channel people can ask about small things they can't figure out, or discuss the future of zp. The admins do not have to stand by to give support. It would be a IRC channel by users for users. Is there one of these from before? I tried #zenphoto at freenode.net, and I can see that the channel has already been created, but there are no users.

So what do yer say?

EDIT: I posted this in the wrong forum! Was going to the GERERAL forum!

We do have an IRC channel #zenphoto on freenode.net, but no one truly uses it I don't think. Unfortunately I don't have time to provide chat help, but if anyone else wants to they're welcome to use it.
  • Well I'll be idling there on a regular basis. I hope someone who knows a thing or two may come and help me today or tomorrow, but this is not the true reason why I think you should have a IRC channel. An IRC channel is very versatile, and it's real time. I like IRC.
  • you must have a lot of free time ;) I left IRC chatting 'bout 10 years ago ... it was just stealing my life, better go outside like to pub or with girlfriend (in fact girlfriend might be much worse than IRC, though :))
  • Don't you think that's a little prejudice? If zenphoto had an official channel with, say 100 users. If I had a small problem which I thought was easy to fix, but didn't find anything googling it, I'm pretty sure it would be a lot faster just asking for it on IRC than making a forum post and waiting for an answer.

Conclusion: I used less time finding a solution, and afterwards I can go outside and play ;)

Please don't adopt IRC as a regular support method. An interested user is just as likely to see a board post as be logged into IRC. At least any help that is given is then available to a search in the future.
  • jlang, I don't want to fight with all of zenphoto's forum about whether or not IRC should be used, but if one wants, a bot can easily store the log of an IRC channel and post them on a log site on the internet for everyone to find and read - but that's NOT my point. I'll give an example: I sometimes use Linux, so if I want to know how to change the colour of some bar or know where to find a config file etc. I just use #linux or #ubuntu on freenode, and I got the answer in a matter of seconds.
BUT this works best for projects with a larger fan base than zen photo (I suppose).
  • i was joking ... anyway i don't think so that IRC would be an useful communication channel for a help, it was used and it is basically used by geeks ... and I see you r probably one of them, nothing against, but i do think that majority of zenphoto users won't install mirc and go ask someone on the chat. forum is much more easier for its simplicity ... for anyone ;) might be better to learn people RTFM as a 1st level of support :))
