filename sort

Album file named 960105-01N.jpg to 960105-31N.jpg then 960106-01N.jpg to 960106-31N.jpg etc. Uploaded via FTP about 5-6 at a time. Viewed in Sort Album page and the images were not in order. About 1/2 were out of order by 3-4 images.

  • Sorry to bug you guys but I'm at the point of abandoing Zenphoto if I can't figure out how to upload photos in name order, at minimum. Sorting isn't working: it takes about 5 minutes PER image to move into place and I have a couple of hundred per album to upload into my 8 galleries.

None of my images are digital. They don't have "info" attached to them. They're scanned 35mm prints done befoe existance of digital photography. What am I doing wrong? I'm using FTP as it's faster. Using ZP didn't seem to make a difference.

Sorry, I can't reproduce that. I just tested it with a few images using the names you provided above and they are sorting perfectly when setting sortorder to filename (And I don't have any info attached to them, too).
  • I just uploaded 50 images FTP at once. ALL went to the top of the sort page, before the first image of the album. The album had 70 MANUALLY (set to filename sort) sorted already. Meaning I have to drag each one down 2 rows at a time to the bottom, then repeat 49 more times. If you didn't reproduce, then what settings would I possibly have wrong.

You kept saying it was the filenames 0.jpg to 500.jpg but this time they have "names" albeit numbers (date/image number combo).
  • EDIT: Actually, on closer inspection, about 1/2 of the 50 went to the TOP before Image 1 and the others to the BOTTOM after Image 70.

I used names like this 960105-01N.jpg and added a few more. Sorts perfectly by filename.

You know that if the Mac sorts 1.jpg, 2.jpg.....10.jpg correctly, does not mean that your server does. Some systems might need to have 01.jpg, 02.jpg and so on so that 10.jpg is not the second in the list.
  • 1. Using rename program, renamed 970107-01-09 to -001-009. Rest of files in test already had leading 0.
    2. Uploaded 970107-001 to 970107-043 via FTP
    3. Viewed Sort Album page (accessed via Edit Album page of the selected Album): in total random order.

Note: I've previously said two other 'problems' of this is the size of the image (from cache) and that I cannot tell what image is what without using another browser to view the album in correct order: I cannot see filenames on hover using any browser.

Sorry, I have to say it again, but these filenames sort correctly by filename in my test. All you should have to do is to set the image sortorder to "filename" and uncheck the "descending" checkbox on hte album edit page. The order of the images on the album edit page right after the upload does not really matter. These should be sorted accordingly to the set sortorder after saving.

Actually there should be no need to sort manually on the sort album page. In fact you disable the filename sortorder if you sort manually.
  • MAYBE, JUST maybe, found what happened on 2nd attempt. I cleared the _album_ of all images but not cache. Did that and uploaded again. Set to filename sort BUT did not go to the Sort Page whatsoever. On Edit Album page, the images are in order and in View. So, will attempt uploading the remainder. The one image not properly named is my album image on the Gallery. I'll do later.

My cache images all add _200.jpg to the filename. Options Themes my "Thumb size" is set to 100. So, if cache is 200, then doesn't that explain the larger image in Sort?

If rest of this album works, will copy over all the images from the CD source and rename.

????? What about the one album where I've already got 1/2 of the image descriptions and titles already done? I manually sorted them. If I switch to FILENAME, will I have to resort? Can't upload again as I'll lose all the information but need the rest of the album.
  • Sort orders are exclusive. If you sort manually, you get the order you put the images in. If you select any other sort order you will get images in that order. So, if you don't want to re-do the order of your already 1/2 done album, don't change the sort order.
  • So, if "rename, move..." feature is already in planning, (I know not immediately): if I kept this offline until then, would I be able to "move" the good stuff into the new Album that would contain the other half of the album that currently is unsorted? That way, the top 1/2 would have its metadata with it and I don't have to redo it. That's what worries me, the loss of all the work.

Hope you guys know I REALLY like ZP but gotta get these ##$( images uploaded and in order :) Was at wits end with this. I've got megabytes worth of files to do :)

You could use an EXIF program and add the data to the images before uploading, then you won't loose anything.
