Upload limit, multiple users or ftp

Ive tested Zen gallery a year or two ago and like it ... its advanced since I last looked but its still a 1 man/woman system.

Questions - I couldn't find by searching:

1. Can the upload limit be changed - most other applications follow php.ini limits which can be set higher than 2mb. Its ridiculously low considering even old camera photo file sizes. I tried dropping a phi.ini file in the zenphoto folder and album folder but no luck. Even said I had uploaded a 3 mb photo successfully but nothing there.
Zip file was a waste of time.

ftp isnt the answer for low tech people=50% of the population.

To be honest I'm looking for a user based gallery - any chance of that happening?
Zenphoto is much cleaner and simpler than Gallery2 or Coppermine, but lacking multiple user features.

Wish list:
Login users
greater file size adjustable in admin
download of albums in zips

ps
If users upload, albums can be created automatically - or does it need approval?

  • In my opinion, I think Zenphoto keeping a personal gallery is a better idea, I am afraid of implement multi-user function will increase the complexity and lead to the change of fast and simple zenphoto....

Zenphoto is actually meant mainly as a personal gallery solution to be customized via themes to your liking (if you are not satisfied with the standard setup).

    1. The upload limit is actually following the one that is set on your server. If you want more you need to set that on your php.ini or contact your ISP. Also even if you set the upload limit higher your server might not be able to process big files. This is depended on the php memory limit of your server. Please see our user guide's troubeshooting section for info about that.

    2. Zenphoto already contains multiple users support. There is also a plugin for self registering. Please do a forum search and visit the functions guide's plugin section.

    3. It is also already possible to download albums as a zip-file. This is a function that is not implemented by default on the standard themes but you can easily do that yourself. Please see also the functions guide for the function to add. It might also be useful to read the theming tutorial.

    4. Ftp upload directly does not need approval. Depends of course how the superior album is setup if you create a subalbum via ftp.
  • Thanks for the detailed reply - I will look into the points. Gallery2 is uploading large files so it seemed a bit strange when Zen wouldnt.
    Will look at it again.

I also have this same issue. I was hoping to use ZenPhoto for our company to help manage our large photo library. Unfortunately this 2MB limit is much too small. I looked around in the troubleshooting section but didn't find anything regarding this limitation.

The biggest appeal of ZenPhoto is that the interface is clean and simple.

The server I have is well capable of handling large file uploads. I've already changed my php.ini file to read 20M instead of 2M but the limit still seems to be in place.

Without going in to the code and modifying it myself I'm coming to the forum to find out if there's something more "supported" that I can do.

Adding the features that igirisjin and I want (especially the large file upload part of it) would not transform ZenPhoto into the turtle you are afraid it would be come. In fact, most likely scenario is that it would make ZenPhoto more robust because it would require better code (not that ZenPhoto is not already good).

Another great feature for the business user is to be able to upload file pairs. The way this would be used is to upload a low-res image and hi-res image (probably JPG and RAW files). This way I could have a thumbnail preview, a medium, large, and RAW version of a photo.
  • The size of an file upload is determined by the PHP ini setting `upload_max_filesize` If you want a larger upload you will have to make changes to your PHP configuration.

Apparently I forgot to restart Apache. Now it's working. Thanks.
  • Hey guys, I tried to search around in the forums or in the Trac but all I found was this old post.

It seems like a lot of people have complaints about the 2 MB limit that most servers put in place. Has there been any discussion about using a Flash uploader to get around this? I believe Wordpress and other CMS's use this strategy for file uploads.

I don't know much about them, but I found this one and this one and this one just by searching Google for flash uploader.

Would it work, certainly would be a nice feature?
