smoothgallery with external carousel

I'm wandering if anyone has managed to get Smoothgallery's external carousel option to work.
I'm using Effervesence+ - I've been able to tweak the other smoothgallery options to work but not the external carousel.
I've been digging through the smoothgalllery forums and I'm not getting anywhere. - It seems that I'm not the only one struggling with this.

I'm hoping someone here has worked this out.
