mod rewrite suddenly stopped working

URLs were working with mod_rewrite 10 minutes ago. now they're not. I tried replacing .htaccess with a clean one and running setup.php--still not working. any ideas?

btw, when i disable mod_rewrite, everything is ok

    i renamed the folder through the admin panel and now it seems to be working again.
