custom index page (default theme)

The "custom index page" feature does not work for me.

The doc says: "rename the index.php to gallery.php, and set custom index page to gallery".

I think the index.php should be moved to themes/default/gallery.php (otherwise the custom index page can not be set to it). Second, the custom index page setting does not seem to affect the default theme. Should it?

These all describe scripts in your them folder. The custom index page is a tool for themes to use. For instance, Effervescence+ and Stopdesign use this to have a "home" page which is different from the album listing page. If a theme does not support the option nothing will happen. Sort of like the text at the beginning of the options says:)
