Does zenphoto 1.2.6 automatically pickup EXIF and/or IPTC comment fields?

I plan to start again with a fresh zenphoto if I can't workout my installation problem (in another thread). What I'd like to know is whether, on photos that I upload to the 'albums' directory directly (ie. via scp or FTP), the EXIF and/or IPTC caption fields will be picked up and used automatically?
