Sharpness

Hello.
When the images in the albums are created, I consistently notice a visible reduction of sharpness. I think that it's been mentioned before, but I couldn't seem to find a solution for this problem. I am not a programmer, but a friend of mine suggested that the PHP libraries (?) used in zenphoto are know to cause bluring in the images. Is there any way to remedy this problem?
Thanks a lot.

  • As the processing of the images obviously do not help the sharpness of an image and cause bluryness, but the effect is very minimal if you change the jpg quality in the config.php from 85 to 100, this will make it so the jpg quality is not compressed to a lower quality. Try that and see how your images appear.

As far as the post you are talking about regarding the sharpness, this I am sure can be implemented as a hack but will drastically increase the time for the thumbnails and resized images to be created.

It wouldn't "drastically" increase the time, only slightly, and do a search for "unsharp" on this forum to find it. You'll probably need to adapt it to the new version's i.php, but it's not terribly hard. Would you just want thumbnails sharpened, or all images? Thumbs would be easy and fast, as they're smaller and wouldn't require as much processing for the sharpening. IMHO, the full-size images look fine under GD, and you're right, the thumbnails are a bit undersharpened. Eh.
  • Thanks for your replies. I tried increasing the "quality" to 100 and didn't notice any difference. And I meant the actual images - don't notice it so much with the thumbnails....
I'll take a look at that post again and will try to experiment with the dimesnions of the images. Thanks.
