Zenphoto on Mac 10.6 - no gettext in php

I was going to upgrade Zenphoto from 1.2.6 to 1.2.9 (it's been a little while). Since I last upgraded zenphoto, I upgraded my Mac to 10.6 (snow leopard) and have discovered the mac default install for php doesn't have the gettext extension installed, so zenphoto won't run on my machine.

I used to use Marc Liyanage's customized PHP installation at www.entropy.ch, but he hasn't done one for Mac 10.6, and there doesn't seem to be another other EASY way for me to get php. (There are ways, but things like MacPorts seem a little intimidating to me -- all that work in the terminal!).

I realize this is more of a mac issue than a zenphoto issue, but I was thinking/hoping someone here might have a solution.

    You need to add gettext to your php install.

    See this message and the pterobyte response. Word fine for my 10.6 install.

    This installation also deals with the missing mcrypt in the standard installation Apple deliverers.

    Why don't you use for example MAMP on Mac? That other than the OS X built in webserver comes with everything perfectly preinstalled. I do most development with that.

    I wish I'd seen that post in the zenphoto forum. I had searched for gettext and it doesn't come up in the search. LOL! It definitely would have saved me hours of aggravation. It ought to be tagged with gettext at some point!

    I also tried following the instructions in the apple forum discussion you mentioned (found it while I was searching around previously), but it didn't work for me. I'm sure I did something wrong, but couldn't get it to work.

    I should have gone with MAMP and perhaps I will. Funny thing was, I ran across MAMP being discussed in a forum which said it wasn't really being developed anymore, which made me stay away from it, but that's obviously not the case.

    If you want to run a local webserver on Mac I can only recommend using the MAMP package instead of the quite incomplete built in server of Mac OS X: www.mamp.info
    I am using that for years for all local development and it is constantly developed (it has just been updated for 10.7 a few weeks ago).
