Installation Nightmare

I have spent all day trying to manually install zenphoto to my new host, hostmonster.com. First of all I could not, for the life of me get it to connect to my new dbserver. I called support 3 times, checked it all out, even got my ip whitelisted.

Eventually I did something right because I got the GO button... I was connected. pretty much right after I uncommented the webpatha and server path in my config file. (worked with the config file for HOURS... finally got it to work.

Then I FINALLY got to the page that says: zenphoto setup
Creating tables...
Done!

You can now View your gallery, or administrate.

either link I choose I get:
Error: The 'albums' directory cannot be found or is not readable.

and the folder ARE set to CHMOD 777.

Just can't win. can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Vincent

  • Nevermind...
took me about 8 hours but I finally got it figured out.

But not until I really frightened myself badly, made myself cry, jacked-off about 3 times just to calm down and took a series of powerful medications ...

    Solution:
morning session: I had used the windows version, after having no luck I figured I needed the UNIX version since the new host runs Unix.

Afternoon session: I must've screwed that up because I wound up deleting everything and going back to the windows version. I finally got that to do everything but read the Albums table from my database.

Evening Session: So I said fuck it one more time and deleted everything and tried the Unix version again.

It was like the sky cracked open, the sun was shining... It had all just been a bad dream, a horrible installation nightmare. It was finally working! The gates of hell were opening to release me once again from my tormented dementia , unto the earth and to my deeply neglected family.

    Epilogue:

I am even going to get to eat some dinner now and watch some tv: like normal people do.

Zen is a very arduous path, my friends, but when you find it, you realize it was never really there. It's like the sound of one hand clapping or the whispers of a syren's song. The magical database's are like monsters who open their arms to eat you but transform into angels, bringing you into the age of online photos with commentary.

Relax; nothing is under control. Patience is a virtue. All Hail the magic conch!

  • hi man, also had this problem today, luckily didn't take me that much to have it working.

read about 20-30 posts about albums, .htaccess and everything barely related... the install wrongly "self-detected" the path to /zp, NOT /zenphoto, so I had to do the .htaccess thing,

.htaccess detected zenphoto in /zp, so it had:

    RewriteBase /zp

but I had zenphoto installed in /zenphoto, so just changed the text to:

    RewriteBase /zenphoto

but yeah, it's a hell if it doesn't work.

    P.S.: Do I have to jack-off?

    :P
    see ya

For future reference -- there's no difference between the Unix/Windows archives -- they're just differently packed (zip vs. tar.gz). Same files once extracted.

Secondly, the htaccess RewriteBase path isn't autodetected, and in the installation instructions provided, it clearly instructs you to change it. Remember, if all else fails, read the instructions ;-)
  • I think... just to make things easier.. the default rewrite base in the .htaccess file should be /zenphoto instead of /zp since /zenphoto is the foldername that it is extracted into anyways, thus cutting down some of the problems people are having.

Also, I think it would be a good idea to maybe disable modrewrite by default instead of enabled. That way the people who know how to use it and what to do with it and know if their server supports it can enable it themselves, thus also cutting down on installation errors.

and really.. if we could get the setup to detect if the cache and albums folders are chmod777, we would have almost all the errors that we seemingly answer on this board daily would be taken care of and accounted for from the get go.

    Just a thought
  • yeah, forgot in the config file it says that :$

and second what Chilifrei64 about the default /zenphoto
