Easiest way to stop random gallery image in effervescence plus

Hello all,
I am new to Zen Photo.
I would like to get rid of the random image at the top of the gallery page of the effervescence plus theme.
The best I could ascertain was that by deleting the following function from the gallery.php file it would do the trick
'printHeadingImage(getRandomImages())'

It did remove the random image from the gallery page, However with the strange side effect of greating an extra

tag that greats an extra thumbnail that is empty

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out. Does anyone have a clue as to where I may start my journey to figuring it out.
Of course if someone knows exactly what the problem may be that would be great too.

First, you are not using the latest release which is 1.4 and second, this is not really the efferescence+ theme. Anyway, review you theme modification code. Here is a hint:
