German umlauts (ä etc) show as ? without changes

Hi all!

I am running an older Zenphoto installation for a while now (ver. 1.03). Now I noticed all German umlaut characters show as question marks, although I have not changed anything on the site. Why is that? Do I have to update? Can I update while keeping the design and database intact, or is 1.03 too old?

    Version 1.0.3 is from 2006 which should pretty much anser the question of "too old". You are lucky that it generally still works on your server anyway.

    Since then of course a lot of things changed and we don't test updates from such old versions explicitly. General info about upgrading:

    Your theme (=design) will require naturally some updates, too. Which that might be I cannot answer of course.
