Well, I was finally able to reproduce the problem and it seems to be a bug in the multifile upload on the backend. I did not notice it because I most always upload via FTP. So the fix is for now to upload via FTP.

I have to pass the general issue to my collegue as he is more familiar with the metadata stuff.

I've added EXIF/IPTC info to photos through photoshop and since they've never shown up on Zenphoto (titles, description, keywords, etc) I thought it wasn't supported. Is there a better way to add this data to the picture and have it show up?

@discovertuscany - untill someone fix this for you. just go to admin > Overview > Refresh Metadata will resolve your issue. If you've added tags properly it'll insert title and description tag from exif to all your added images.

just try that out. i did tried and it works. though it'll take really long time if you have 100's of images hosted already.

Of course there is also a metadata refresh button on each album's admin page so you don't have to refresh them all.

Refreshing is the only thing to get Zenphoto fetch it again from already known images.

Hello,

I have been experimenting with uploading images that include tags, title, description, etc. in the meta data. I have tried it with zenphoto versions 1.2.8 and 1.2.9. Using Picasa 3.0 to tag my images.

"Title" (returned as the filename of my image) and the "Description" appear uploading through the admin or FTP, but the tags didn't work.

"Tags" work using Picasa only when uploaded via FTP. If uploaded through admin, the tag doesn't show up, but can be added manually to the image and the "link" will work.

This approach worked for me in both versions.

I just tried an image with a title and description in the meta data added via Photoshop. It worked for me with the admin upload.

My guess is that this issue might be similar to the known one that some programs mess with the encoding of these metadata. If I recall correctly Lightroom does this (can surely be found via the forum search). Maybe Picasa is doing things "wrong", too.

May be. The ability to mass edit images to add tags is a function that appeared with the last upgrade I have for Picasa. If it is doing things "wrong", hopefully it will be corrected in the next version.

@acrylian - sir i am not a progarmmer or an expert but seems if that is the case and lightroom dosent add tags properly then uploading via ftp should'nt add title in zenphoto or even if you upload through admin area and do metadata refresh it should not grab title and apply to image.

it seems that as we discuss upload function in admin is doing something to my knowledge.
lets the expert handle his way as i just got his ticket reply and seems we may have the solution soon.

well we created a script to fix titles and descriptions from a past backup... but i went and tried a metadata refresh and the titles and descriptions have been lost again! so the problem seems to be connected to the metadata refresh, I can't understand why it happens only to some pictures and not all though.
i never opened a ticket for the initial problem, should i?

OK figured out the problem looking at the database - not all of pictures have EXIF data - those that do are the ones taken with the Olympus Digital Camera! And the camera embeded "olympus digital camera" as EXIFtitle and EXIFdescription.
So Zen Photo is technically doing what it is told to do and it is picking automatically the EXIF data but in this case it is something we don't want: is there a way to exclude this automatic pickup from the images?? (it wasn't a problem before, is this a new feature with the latest update?)

Picking up the title/description is not a new feature. There is not a way to exclude this behavior except not to do a metadata refresh.

so what can be the workout then for upload thorugh admin and get title ? metadata refresh takes huge time when we have 100's of images.

Only if you have a huge number of images in your album. But that is moot since the suggestion was NOT to do the refresh.

Thank you sbillard for your help - this has made me realize it is better to get working on making the metadata perfect so that everything works out better overall. I found iTag for updating metadata and it seems to work really well... and that way I don't have to worry about whether a refresh will delete important info.

I've run into this OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA title issue just today, as a matter of fact. I'm uploading a massive amount of photos through FTP to my server into the Albums directory (over 1,000). Is there any way to fix these particular images, or am I hosed? Thanks.

I guess you really mean any way to fix short of going and editing each image. I am not aware of any "fixit" script although such a script would be fairly simple so long as you can tell which images you want to fix.
