I would like to restrict certain users to only view certain albums. I have made the gallery private and enabled the user_groups plugin. I have also created a new group and allocated a managed album but users in this group can still browse the entire gallery? What am I doing wrong?

Also I would like to use the single login plugin/hack but I can't download the code from the webpage?

The file to download was wrongfully named. It should now work (I don't know if this will still work)

Regarding the rights you don't have set view all rights for that group?

yes it make no sense.

The only way I can make it work is to make the gallery public, then allocate a password to each album, then make the gallery private again and give management rights to the users for each gallery they are restricted to.

Is there any way to allocate a password automatically to albums as the files are uploaded to the server (this happens via a samba share)??

Perhaps you should describe the rights, etc. of your site. Setting the gallery to private is exactly the same as password protecting each album (etc.)

Basically I have a ubuntu server at home that acts as a webserver and local samba server amongst other things. There is a samba share that contains all our photos which is added to by various local users. There are a few albums I would like to make viewable to a couple friends via a generic guest-type login but I want to make the rest of the albums only available to the local users.

What I would like to do is to restrict access to all the albums that are uploaded via samba to the local users only by default then manually allow access to select albums to selected guest-like logins.

You would have to create a plugin to do this. You can probably start with http://www.zenphoto.org/news/filter-new_objects and make the appropriate changes to add a password when the album is discovered by Zenphoto if it came from the Samba server. But of course, you will have to figure out how to determine that.

Of course Zenphoto is not at all involved when the albums are uploaded by an external agent, so it will have no knowledge of their source. It probably would be easiest to password protect all new albums then manually free up any you wish to be public.

Have fun with Gallery3. If you read their help as well as you read ours you should have a wonderful time.

but the user admin rights in zenphoto don't restrict access to any albums/images. Once a user has logged in they can view anything in the gallery? Unless I am missing something fairly major?

Since you are off to gallery3 I see no reason to further educate you.

Maybe you should be more specific about what you think does not work.
