I have just done a fresh install and made a few small changes, but now the theme options for the StopDesign are greyed out so I can't change them.

Must this now be done directly in the database?

I just need to change how many images are displayed on the album page.

In relation to this, the value is set to "15", however on the album page, 17 thumbnails show. How can I ensure only 15 thumbs are shown?

The options are greyed out because the theme does not support theme. This theme for examlpe requires fixed image sizes for layout reasons. Any theme may choose to override backend options for this reason.

On this theme one or two thumbnails are the prev/next links for further pages. Also this might happen if you have subalbums as they are mixed. See also the troubleshooting on this.

If I deleted the "next/previous" thumbnails, or the function for this, then the page displays two further images. Is there a way to force the theme to show only the 15 images. Users would then navigate through the album using the text based "next / previous" links.

You will have to explicitly modify the theme itself. Unless you are skilled at both CSS and PHP I would not recommend doing so. This theme is quite complex and is easily broken.

I've modified it a fair bit so far and it's mostly going alright.
Hmm, I did change it on a theme before I did a fresh install.
