Let Someone Else Take ZP Over!

Will someone please take over this project? I've been using Zenphoto for well over a year, probably more around 2 now. There are so many changes needed and most of them are already coded out and patched throughout the forum. Why doesnt Tris at least let someone take over the project while he is on hiatus?

Just a thought.

  • I agree with that.

I would like to see my ZenVideo hack in the standard distribution of ZenPhoto.
By the way, i have also developped a patch for protecting albums with a password (in response to a trac ticket), but can't upload it to the svn...
  • I would agree with the above statements. I haven't seen any updates in some time. And this software has a lot of potential.
  • I'm sorry to say that but I also agree with that. Zenphoto was/is the best Photoalbum software all over the web because it's clean, fast, easy to use and not overloaded. I'm tired waiting for updatesa and don't want to see that project dying. I would help but I'm no programmer, just a designer. But if that skills are needed I'd like to spend some time for that!

    Greetings, Lordcoffee
  • ZenPhoto actually needs more than one lead-developer for not dying.
Trisweb has done a really really great work by making this software with little help.

We can't take over a project like that and get rid of someone who has spent so many time on it. But now, ZenPhoto needs a team of developers with a lead-developer !

Personally, I know i would not have the time for leading such a project, but i'm interested in a developer position :)

Come on php/html/css/javascript developers, Zenphoto wants you !

Just FYI guys -- I will definitely "let" someone else take over the project for a while or longer. If you're interested in SVN commit access and you have time and skill to take it over please contact me by email. It's up to you guys. [Trisweb at zenphoto.org NO LONGER WORKS] -- use trisweb ...at... gmail or trisweb ...at... trisweb to contact (both .com of course).

I want to stay on the project, of course, but my new company is taking all of my time right now. I'm really sorry I haven't had the time to keep working on ZP, but I hope it can still flourish with more developers and a great community.
  • Tris-

Thank you for putting forth such a deal! I honestly didnt mean I think someone should 'take' the project, only continue it with your blessing.
  • Hi Tris,

I'm glad and sad at the same time to hear that. It's like listening to someone who is giving his baby away. But as far as I can imagine, if we'll find some skilled developers for zenphoto as you are we could have a nice and growing community on the base of a great program.

  • Here's to hoping someone can apply some of the 'hacks' in a graceful manner to the trunk!
  • The fact that Zenphoto doesn't move on irritates me but I can understand now that I know that Tris is working on his company...
The only thing I really need, and I have been waiting since 9 months is the subalbums (I still haven't got it to work correctly) and especially the administration part... Tris was so close to delivering it out...
  • Id like to see subalbums complete with admin functionality
    Tagging
    Google Maps Integration

Ive seen all but the admin subalbums done as hacks.
  • Well, i have written a mail to Trisweb... but he hasn't yet responded.
I've asked him for a svn account, so if he is okay for that, i will be a contributor to zenphoto :)

Personally, i've developed ZenVideo and the password protection for albums. I wish i could implement that in the official source code.
  • For an almost complete subalbum hack see the theme effervescence_simpleviewer.
  • La0c00n: this gives me some great hope for zenphoto again!! I have wanted to use ZenVideo for a while not but have chose not to because I dont like the idea of altering the SVN code. Good luck to you and thank you!

sbillard: I was under the impression that paging for subalbums has worked in the SVN for some months now. I know it does in my theme. Now some admin functionality to order these subalbums and its images along with deleting and moving would be great!

I've been eagerly following both ZenPhoto and Photostack development.
They both seem to be the work of generous but busy one person development teams. Both have seen little to no recent development.

I'm in no way a developer -so I'm making an uneducated guess that they're coded too differently to just combine - but from a designer's standpoint they're quite similar.
There are things about both programs that I wish the other had...

It may be completely out of line to suggest that the developers combine efforts (for many reasons - one being that a bit of competition can be a good thing)

Anyway - I'm just tossing the idea out there - not arguing the point..

amyg - Zenphoto was developed based on my frustrations with photostack's inadequacies, and photostack is now based on a different core called Singapore. It's basically a theme for it. So no, I don't see us joining forces anytime soon. Please, however, feel free to submit your wishes in the bug tracker so we can improve Zenphoto.

La0c00n - I will return your email shortly, I've had a couple requests that I have to sort through but as you're a forum regular and contributor of ZenVideo you're at the top of the list.

All else - we'll get things back on track soon. Perhaps I will dedicate a week of my time soon to pull things together and get a new team of developers jump started. Keep sending me emails if you're interested!

As an over-committed designer - I totally understand how hard it must be to manage such a huge project and appreciate your work on this one.
I wish my codeing skills were strong enough to be of any help.
Maybe my input as a designer will be of some help -and possibly in the future, I can help with documentation.
ZenPhoto is already very close to suiting my needs - once the subalbum support is there - it's pretty much perfect (rss support would be handy for some too)
Anyway, I'll put my thoughts together and head over to the bug tracker.
    thanks again for your generousity.

No, if you have subalbums in an album folder, all the subalbums thumbs get listed,no matter how many there are nor what the value of albums per page is. Also, if you have both albums and images in the folder, you get both the album thumbs and the image thumbs. Paging is just for the image thumbs.
  • trisweb Administrator
sbillard: you're right, sub-albums are not yet paged.
  • trisweb:

Is there any reason not to go ahead and release v 1.0.9? It fixes a bunch of things and might make people's life simpler around here given that 1.1 is a bit away.
  • Hm, a few months ago, I was following the development of ZP, but due to my graduation, I didn't have time to follow the development process. Now, I'm working full-time and it appears that I did not miss very much. I have some ideas to improve Zenphoto, so I will probably start submitting patches to trac soon.
  • I noticed that the bugtracker is a little polluted with spam... Is there anyone else besides trisweb who can delete comments on issues? Because this way, the bugtracker is not very usable and also gives a very bad impression to people new to the project trying to submit a bug report.
  • Those of us who are mods can work with stuff on the forums, but I don't believe that extends to the bugtracker or the trac wiki. Tris may be able to give one of us (or all three of us that are mods) access to perform deletes, etc. so that we can clean it up. Is that OK by you Tris? I'd be happy to go in there and clean up a bit.
  • I fixed a large number of bugs (that are active). Many titles were deleted by spammers as well as general properties of the bugs. After I'm finished cleaning up the titles, I will try to triage bugs that are open and try to confirm them so the number of open issues will (hopefully) be reduced.
  • I'm still waiting for the mail from trisweb to get an access for the svn.
It's a good idea too that the forum moderators get some administrator power over the trac's spam !
  • I'm sure some of you have noticed a lack of services on my part in the forums. I'm sorry to say, but I have to take a 3yr hiatus. If you've read my blog, you'll know that I'll be starting a very intense 2.5yr program at school in August. I need to focus my attention on that. If you guys would like to take any code from any of the hacks/plugins that I've developed, please feel free to do so.

I'll be keeping an eye out for ZenPhoto since I still plan on using it for my own site, but I cannot work on developing any themes/hacks for it any longer.

    Thanks.
  • I've restored the titles of all bugs which are 'active' in Trac, and most of the closed bugs as well (issues which has 1.1 or lower as milestone). I need to restore a small number of closed issues (this can be handy for future reference) and then I need to check the validity of all active issues. I think a clean and up to date issue tracker makes it easier for people to browse outstanding issues on Zenphoto and create patches for them, and it is useful for developers to maintain an overview of the outstanding issues.

Just want to chime in that I have been eagerly awaiting the update since even before summer began, so it is good to hear that this project is going to get up to speed again... the script was good but some key features were lacking (image rotation, EXIF, subalbum support), I neither have the time or expertise to go into the code myself, so I waited for all this time with not much happening (I generally check up the site/forum/roadmap every other day).

Hopefully something will happen soon, and I won't loose hope yet for such a well thought-out and executed gallery script, I'll stay around to see what happens.
  • If more developers are working on Zenphoto, it may be useful to start a mailinglist on which developers can discuss their plans and issues.
  • Why not open an IRC channel...
    Like #zenphoto on freenode.
It could help developpers to talk about software issues and help directly people with installation problems.
  • That is also an option :) However, I don't have very much time during the day to spend time on IRC.
